"THE LARRY SHOW" May 16-August 25, 2011 The George Caleb Bingham Gallery is pleased to present The Larry Show, curated by J. Sloane Snure Paullus, an exhibition consisting solely of representations of Larry Bauer, Columbia resident and frequent figure model. Featuring over 120 artworks, representations run the gamut from classroom assignments by beginning artists to professional explorations of portraiture. The diversity of the exhibition serves as a critique of the commonly held belief that a portrait can somehow capture the essence of its sitter. Further, the inclusion of so many portraits of Larry not only foregrounds his status as an icon within the local community, but also emphasizes Larry’s visage as iconic within the broader contexts of Art History and Popular Culture. J. Sloane Snure Paullus (born Denver, CO 1981) grew up in Amarillo, Texas. She received an MFA in Painting from the University of Missouri in 2010. Snure Paullus has also received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art History, with minors in Studio Art and Sociology from Wake Forest University in 2003. Her work has been included in exhibitions in Austin, Kansas, Missouri, Chicago, North Carolina, and Georgia, and was recently featured in a solo exhibition at Russell/Projects in Richmond, VA, as well as the periodical, New American Paintings. Snure Paullus will be returning to Amarillo, TX soon where she hopes to continue working on curatorial projects as well as her own artwork. Both the exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.
