Lifetime Achievement Showcase: Part Two
Frank Stack, Lawrence Rugolo, Larry Kantner

July 14 - August 7, 2008
reception:
July 25, 2008
5:00 - 7:00 pm

Lifetime Achievement Showcase - Part Two, is the second installment of a two-part exhibition highlighting the creative research of six of MU Art Department’s Professor Emeriti. The show is a retrospective of paintings, prints, drawings, illustrations, ceramic sculpture and photography produced by these artists throughout their careers. Each of the professors featured has made important contributions to his chosen field of research and each of them has had a lasting impact on the MU Department of Art and campus at large.

Frank StackFrank Stack is credited with inventing "underground comix" - the now celebrated precursors to today's graphic novels - back in 1962. Released under the unlikely nom de plume of Foolbert Sturgeon, Stack’s revolutionary publication Adventures of Jesus depicted the contemporary escapades of a scruffy, socially conscious Jesus Christ. Frank Stack also developed an international reputation as a painter and print maker. He has published two monographs on his work and his art has been featured in American Artist, The Artist's Magazine and The Village Voice. As a graphic novelist, he has collaborated with the well-known writer Harvey Pekar on American Splendor comics, and on the critically acclaimed graphic novel Our Cancer Year (winner of the 1995 Harvey award for Best Graphic Album of Original Work). Stack's drawings from this book were recently featured in the academy-award nominated film, American Splendor. He has exhibited his artwork in New York, St. Louis, Los Angeles, Paris, Turkey, Korea and China.

Kanter illustrationLarry Kantner’s artistic career includes work in seriography, viscosity prints, photo etching and painting. Kantner’s early work addressed brushwork and color with the figure often merged with the background. As his vision progressed, he adopted a hard edge style with an emphasis on limited color fields produced on a large picture plane. Dr. Kantner’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally. These venues include: Guangzhou Museum of Art in China; Hunterdon Museum of Art; Art Museum at Won Kwang University and Backk-shang Gallery in Korea; Hill Country Arts Foundation in Ingram, Texas. Furthermore, Larry Kantner has been awarded and recognized from various organizations and institutions such as being elected a Distinguished Fellow of the National Art Education Association, the USSEA Edwin Ziegfeld award for distinguished leadership to the field of international art education, the University of Missouri T.W. Kemper Fellowship for Excellence in Teaching, the NAEA Distinguished Service Award, and the national June King McFee Award. The Missouri Art Education Association established the Larry A. Kantner Outstanding Research Award. In 2003, he was awarded the MU College of Education’s Pillar of Excellence in Teaching.
