Past Exhibit MFA Thesis Exhibition: April 6 - April 16, 2009 Monuments to Water and Air Systems, an exhibit of new pieces by sculptor Matt Moyer. Mixed media assemblages that explore the various characteristics - both real and imagined - of the water and air distribution systems we utilize everyday. Additionally, 9 -12 foot tall steel abstractions of machines and mechanized systems from our everyday landscape will be included. Water and air systems, though staples of our everyday lives, garner little if any attention from society unless there is an inconveniencing problem. Moyer’s monuments seek to shed new light on the often-unrecognized human qualities such as creativity, precision, hope and adaptability that are characteristic to these systems. Additionally, Moyer’s ambition for these works is to project a respect and appreciation for the people who create, install and maintain these systems and mechanized systems that are so important to our society. This exhibit at the George Caleb Bingham Gallery is a space for viewers to reflect upon industry, the machine and our relationship to and reliance on them. Matt Moyer is a candidate for Master of Fine Arts degree at the University of Missouri. Matt works in numerous materials in this exhibition. He assembles wheel thrown ceramic components to pipe and found industrial implements that explore the gallery space as if it were one with the sculptures. His public sculptures have been exhibited regionally in Illinois, Iowa and Kansas. This exhibit is in partial fulfillment of the requirements for his degree. The exhibition, reception and lecture are free and open to the public. |
