Past Exhibit The Isolation of Western Society from the Revelations of Nature March 2 - 13, 2009 The Isolation of Western Society from the Revelations of Nature, an exhibit of new drawings and sculptures by artist John Selburg. Massive charcoal drawings and small wood sculptures fill the gallery, expressing the battle between the spiritual balance of nature and the artificial existence upon which humans have departed. John Selburg, a candidate for Master of Fine Arts at the University of Missouri, works with charcoal on BFK to create large surreal drawings. This exhibit is in partial fulfillment of the requirements for his degree. People have become disconnected from nature in Western society. Their senses are overloaded through technological stimulation and isolation from the non-human world. The further people become physically and mentally entrapped within the manmade world, the more separated they become from the natural world. This severance leads to two negative outcomes; the destruction of the natural world and ignorance toward God. John’s exhibit at the George Caleb Bingham Gallery is a space for viewers to reflect upon the direction of Western society. The exhibition and reception are both free and open to the public. |
