What the Sleep-Starved See
Graduating Senior Exhibition

December 8 – 19, 2008
reception:
December 19, 2008, 5 - 7pm

Emerging from a four (or more) year battle with pigments and lighting, graphics and media, the graduating artists of MU’s Art Department would love to finally get some sleep. Not, however, before they present, happily, the exciting array of artistic and commercial talent that has come together this winter. Featuring the collective images of 17 artists, their many days of hard work, and their many more nights of active insomnia, the George Caleb Bingham Gallery presents this year’s senior show: What the Sleep-Starved See.

The artists are graduating seniors Shannon Barth, Thomas Bauman, Shira Berkowitz, Jeff Brooks, Becca Doering, Natalie Foster, Kelly Graham, Katie Jenkins, Jessica Liss, Dan Magee, Aaron Marsh, Matt Potter, Nik Roetemeyer, Mike Timmons, Kathryn Walker, Mallory Whiffen, and Nate Zabel.

Offering a surprising amount of diversity among the art genres, What the Sleep-Starved See lines the gallery walls and pedestals with paintings, drawings, prints, graphic designs, sculpture, and photography. Specific subject matter varies from the eerie to the sad to the funny, as artists have operated more or less independently in the creation of their work over the years. But they all operate under the same artistic umbrella that is the Art Department at the University of Missouri, a virtual beehive of art production in the center of Columbia.

And what of all those nights these young artists spent with pencil in hand, or seated on the potter’s wheel, or with eyes burning into a computer screen? What exactly does the artist produce when sight and thought are filtered through the sleep-deprived brain? Let the gallery walls tell you.

The reception will be held December 19 from 5:00 - 7:00 pm. The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.
