Susan Taylor Glasgow:
The Communal Nest

September 7 - October 1, 2009
reception: September 17, 4:30 - 8pm
in conjuction with MU Campus Gallery & Museum Crawl

The Communal Nest is a community project of 500 glass twigs produced by Susan Taylor Glasgow, other artists and non-artists from around the world. The installation metamorphosizes and grows as it moves from location to location. Twigs are added from each community where the exhibition is hosted. The premiere exhibition of the nest was at the Pittsburgh Glass Center (2008), and the George Caleb Bingham Gallery is pleased to host the second viewing of this piece as it travels throughout the world. In addition to the installation, a number of other works that explore issues of home, growth and shelter will be included. This exhibition is part of the annual MU Campus Gallery and Museum Crawl.

Susan works in collaboration with local Women’s shelters at each venue. For this venue, Susan will work with the McCambridge Center Women’s Shelter. Women from the shelter project will produce additional twigs to add to the nest. This piece is meant to raise awareness about the abuse of women as well as provide a forum to discuss these issues.

Susan Taylor Glasgow is an award-winning, internationally known artist who explores issues of family, home and domestic life gone awry through fused and slumped glass in combination with other media. Solo exhibitions include the Pittsburgh Glass Center (2008), Heller Gallery New York and SOFA, Southwestern Illinois College and many others. Her work is part of permanent collections at the Arkansas Center for the Arts, Little Rock; Alexander Tutsek-Stiftung Museum, Germany; Chrysler Museum of Art, Norfolk, VA; Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh, PA; and the Creative Glass Center of America Museum, NJ. Prestigious awards include a residency at the Pittsburgh Glass Center, Pilchuck Glass school scholarship and residency as well as awards in regional and national juried exhibitions. Susan Taylor Glasgow’s work is represented by Heller Gallery in New York.

Reception: Thursday, September 17, 2009, 4:30-8 pm. Refreshments will be served. Both the exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.
